The Story
I encountered this stunning silversword on a hike with friends through Haleakala crater. It was a crystal clear day with just hints of clouds in the sky. The hike, at elevation ranging from about 10,000’ to 8,500’ and back up, is grueling but awe-inspiring and traverses other-worldly terrain. I took a photograph of this silversword in bloom along the way, which informed this painting done in Gansai Tambi (traditional Japanese pan) watercolor.
The Haleakala silversword (‘ahinahina) exists only in the summit areas of Haleakala, hence the title of this piece. It can live for 90 years or more. In its lifetime, it blooms only once, sending a spectacular stalk skyward with purple blossoms. Soon after blooming, it dies and scatters its seeds to the high-elevation wind.
This unique plant is a threatened species that is protected by Haleakala National Park. Haleakala Conservancy is the philantropic partner to the National Park, filling funding gaps for projects designed and executed by Park staff, including silversword population recovery and stabilization. A portion of proceeds from the sales of “Only Here” will go to Haleakala Conservancy.
