Hey, What’s a Chrysalis?
Pronounced (KRI-suh-liss)
Some think a chrysalis is the same thing as a cocoon. It isn’t.
A cocoon is spun from the outside, as a silk shelter a moth caterpillar builds around itself. A chrysalis is something altogether different and altogether more astonishing. It is a butterfly caterpillar itself, transformed. When a butterfly caterpillar sheds its final skin, what's left is not a container. It is a living structure that the butterfly caterpillar has become.
What’s on the inside? For a time, it looks like it has dissolved entirely. The butterfly caterpillar essentially liquefies, breaking down into what scientists call imaginal cells. Great name, right? They’re a kind of biological blueprint that already contains, encoded within it, everything needed to become a butterfly.
As with all energy, nothing is lost. It is transformed. What emerges is so different from what went in that it seems impossible. Yet, it happens, quietly and without fanfare, all the time.
That is what we believe creativity does. Something goes in. Something completely different comes out. Somehow, everything it needed was already there.

Every piece that comes out of Chrysalis Design Studio carries something of Maui: its light, its wildness, its improbable beauty. Maui is a place of extraordinary contrasts: ancient volcanic landscapes and coral reefs, rare endemic species found nowhere else on earth, a sky that changes its mind every hour. It is impossible to live here without being humbled by what the natural world does effortlessly.
The story behind all of this is a personal one.
It starts with grief, a dog named Yoda, and a monarch butterfly who couldn't fly. It results in a belief that beauty, creativity, and transformation are not separate things, but one thing, moving through the world in different forms.
