The Story
This is Beatrice, the butterfly who started it all, and was my natural choice for my first entirely original composition for a painting. This was inspired by a photograph I took of her on the pincushion proteas in our backyard, where she spent many an afternoon sunning herself. Monarch butterflies have unique wing vein and spot patterns akin to a human fingerprint. So, I worked very carefully to reproduce her patterns exactly as they were. I first sketched her from the photograph, and then painted with a combination of watercolor and gouache. This painting of Beatrice is what I later utilized for the butterfly in the Chrysalis Design Studio logo.
